Drumming by the beach to the Garifuna beat
This date is something special. You and your partner will receive a private lesson at Brighton's most picturesque location: the sea front. Learn all about the history and music of the UNESCO-recognised Garifuna culture, as told to you by your expert instructor, Ray. You and your partner will learn and practice a few different Garifua rhythms, and play them together while Ray accompanies you with a smaller, more melodic drum. You'll also get to hear him sing a traditional song to your new-found rhythm. The pace of the lesson will be adjusted to suit you and your partner. Garifuna drums and rhythms are dynamic, exciting and quite different to the African djembe rhythms you have heard before, thanks to the fusion of African and indigenous Amerindian history of the Garifuna. Lessons are adapted to your skills and experience - from total beginners, to professional percussionists. Ray doesn't use formal music or drum teaching methods, but instead uses fun, hands-on methods that anybody can learn from. Ray has been playing drums for almost 30yrs and launched Warasa Garifuna Drum School, a 5* rated drum school in his home country of Belize in 2012. Now he's bringing his fun and engaging drumming and spirit to Brighton! Seafront drumming is dependent on the weather and daylight....After dark, and if the weather is too cold or wet, we will relocate to a working music studio in Kemptown.
Note: If you want your date to be on the seafront, then book a time at least 90 minutes before it gets dark! After dark, or if the weather is too cold or wet, we will relocate to a working music studio in Kemptown. The latest your lesson can begin is 5pm.
